Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of three new products to its suite of hearing technology solutions. (July 6, 2020) - Cochlear Limited (ASX:COH), the global leader in implantable hearing solutions, today announced the U.S. cochlear implant recipients, Custom Sound Pro fitting software to enhance support for hearing professionals I don't notice any real difference in sound quality or other aspects between the two.Approval also includes extending the Nucleus 7 Sound Processor to the first U.S. On Kanso 2, the battery is not removable, so you would have to use the portable charger, which isn't that bad, but it's another "thing" On the Kanso 1 - it's similar (it only used disposable batteries, which was a drawback). There is one difference between the two options which may not be so obvious: if the battery runs out on the N6/N7, you just take it off and put another one on. Now, electronics and batteries have shrunk enough that they can be put into an off-the-ear package without needing a super strong magnet to hold it into place (which would not be comfortable). If I had to guess - historically with the size of electronics and the weight of batteries, that was the only real option. The part that sits on your ear with the on-the-ear varieties is just a convenient place to hold the package. Having glasses, the N6, and a mask all competing for space on the ear was not fun. One of the main reasons I chose the Kanso 2 is that I also wear glasses. As others have said - neither is "better." Being discreet was not a factor for me - I keep my hair super short, and both are quite visible. Just yesterday I got my upgrades - and I picked the Kanso 2. When I got my second ear done, I got the N6, and then Cochlear offered me the Kanso (version 1) because it had just come out. Yes it's all in one case but if you have short or no hair it kinda looks like horns (again personal opinion) and if you have long hair the BTE would also be covered. I feel like the OTE is less discreet than the BTE. If placed "wrongly" it might even focus backward instead of forward.Īside from that on a personal note. The most important difference is with the directionality, while a BTE (CP1000) has a microphone placement which allows for a rather natural directional hearing an OTE cannot support that and depending on the placement of the implant the directionality leans toward the side. That can result in complications if the pressure needs to be too high but is mostly something that shouldn't matter, just something to take into consideration. That means you will have more weight and most often need a stronger magnet. First with the OTE you have everything within one case which ist held entirely on top of the implant without support from the ear. So in short Kanso 2 is the only OTE version currently available from Cochlear.įor question 2: yes there are definitely drawbacks for the OTE (Kanso/Kanso 2). As for question 1: every manufacturer provides one model for OTE and one for BTE, there are options to wear the BTE away from the head with a long coil cable however I don't know if Cochlear supports that.
